Saigon Cinnamon and Rivaroxaban

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rivaroxaban and Saigon Cinnamon in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Saigon Cinnamon safety at a glance

Saigon Cinnamon overall Use caution Generally safe as a food spice, but large supplement doses raise concerns mainly due to its high coumarin content.
Pregnancy Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but avoid medicinal or supplement doses during pregnancy due to limited safety data.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but avoid concentrated supplement doses because safety has not been studied.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rivaroxaban

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rivaroxaban is filed under 5 classifications — including anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Saigon Cinnamon has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being hepatotoxic drugs (moderate) — and none of Rivaroxaban’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Saigon Cinnamon Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Rivaroxaban. It is the side-effect record for Saigon Cinnamon on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Saigon Cinnamon, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Liver problems Worth acting on Additional detail

“There is some concern about the safety of ingesting large amounts of Saigon cinnamon for extended durations due to its coumarin content. Saigon cinnamon contains higher levels of coumarin than other cinnamon species. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg daily can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin is discontinued.”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Saigon Cinnamon — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Rivaroxaban’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Rivaroxaban column appears here.

This page covers Saigon Cinnamon only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rivaroxaban page lists 285 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rivaroxaban page

“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto). It slows how the body clears this blood thinner, and higher levels mean more bleeding risk.”

About Saigon Cinnamon

What is Saigon Cinnamon?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.

Cinnamomum loureiroi · Lauraceae · Inner bark (and bark essential oil) · Ground spice, sticks (quills), capsules, extracts, tea, essential oil

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Saigon Cinnamon is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Saigon Cinnamon record says about it on its own.

Saigon Cinnamon: dosing

There is no well-established standardized dose for Saigon cinnamon, and product strengths vary widely. Studies on cinnamon have used different amounts and forms, making it hard to recommend a single reliable dose.If you choose to use a supplement, the safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban tablets are used to reduce the risk of stroke in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in a vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE, a blood clot in the lungs), and lower the chances of these clots coming back. They also help prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, protect hospitalized patients at risk for clots, and — in combination with aspirin — reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with coronary artery disease (CAD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Rivaroxaban tablets are also approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism, blood clots in veins) and preventing recurrence in pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years, and for preventing clots in children aged 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure. Rivaroxaban for oral suspension (available as Rivaroxaban Granule and Xarelto oral suspension) is specifically indicated for these two pediatric uses.
