Saigon Cinnamon and Dapsone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Dapsone

Dapsone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Saigon cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing dapsone and Saigon cinnamon: it's not about one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, it's about the liver doing double duty. Dapsone can occasionally stress the liver on its own, and cassia cinnamons like Saigon are high in coumarin, a compound that has caused liver trouble in animal studies and in people taking very large concentrated doses. Stacking two things that can tax the liver may, in theory, add up.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not proven cases. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Regular high-dose supplement capsules are the real question. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist before starting a concentrated product.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dapsone page

“Dapsone treats serious conditions, from dermatitis herpetiformis to leprosy, and its supplement list is one I'd want a patient to read closely rather than skim. Most entries touch how the body handles dapsone through the CYP3A4 enzyme, so grapefruit can raise its blood level while St.”

About Saigon Cinnamon

What is Saigon Cinnamon?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.
