Here's the simple version: both Sweet Annie and dapsone can be tough on your liver, so taking them together might add up and put extra strain on it. This isn't about Sweet Annie changing how dapsone works in your blood. It's more about two things that each carry a small liver risk landing on the same organ at once.

With dapsone, you already want to watch for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, unusual tiredness, or feeling unusually short of breath. Adding an herb that may bother the liver could make those easier to trigger. Honestly, the evidence here is thin and mostly theoretical, so don't panic, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Dapsone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the honest picture with Sweet Annie and Dapsone. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process dapsone. Sweet Annie's main compound, artemisinin, sends mixed signals to this enzyme in lab tests. One part of the plant may speed the enzyme up, while the whole extract seems to slow it down, so we honestly can't predict which way it would push your dapsone levels in real life.

Why this matters: if dapsone ran higher than expected, you could see more of its known issues, like a low red blood cell count (hemolysis) or, rarely, a serious blood problem called methemoglobinemia. This is only test-tube evidence so far, not proven in people. Still, I'd loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them, and watch for unusual tiredness, paleness, or shortness of breath.

Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is the source of artemisinin, a compound used in prescription antimalarial drugs. While the purified drug is well studied for malaria, the herb itself as a supplement is not proven for the wide range of conditions people use it for, and self-treating malaria with the raw herb is dangerous. What Is Dapsone Used For?

Brand names: Dapsone, Avlosulfon, Aczone

Dapsone tablets are used to treat dermatitis herpetiformis (a chronic, intensely itchy blistering skin condition) and leprosy (all forms, except where proven resistance to dapsone exists). For leprosy, dapsone tablets are typically used in combination with other anti-leprosy medicines.

Aczone Gel (dapsone gel, 7.5%) and dapsone gel are indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older. This topical form is applied to the skin and is not used for leprosy or dermatitis herpetiformis.
