Why this applies to Clindamycin

Clindamycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the quick version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear clindamycin. Sweet Annie may bump into that same enzyme, so in theory it could change how much clindamycin stays in your system. The tricky part is that the lab data points in both directions. One compound in the plant (artemisinin) seemed to speed the enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seemed to slow it down. So we honestly can't say for sure which way it would go.

Because this is only test-tube research, I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I also wouldn't ignore it. If clindamycin cleared faster, your infection might not be fully treated; if it built up, you could see more stomach upset or diarrhea. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, especially since clindamycin is treating an active infection.

What Is Clindamycin Used For?

Clindamycin is prescribed for serious infections caused by certain bacteria — including anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive without oxygen), streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci. It's often chosen when penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used, such as in people with a penicillin allergy.

It can treat infections of the lungs, skin and soft tissue, bloodstream, abdomen, and female reproductive organs. Because it carries real risks, doctors reserve it for infections where safer antibiotics aren't appropriate.
