Why this applies to Oxybutynin

Oxybutynin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the simple version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down oxybutynin, and Sweet Annie may tinker with that enzyme. The tricky part is that the lab data points in two directions. One component (artemisinin) seems to speed up CYP3A4, which could clear oxybutynin faster and make it work less well, meaning more bladder urgency or leakage. But the whole-plant extract seems to slow the enzyme, which could let oxybutynin build up and bring out side effects like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, or feeling drowsy.

Honestly, this is only based on test-tube research, so we don't really know what happens in a real person. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

About Oxybutynin

What Is Oxybutynin Used For?

Brand names: Ditropan, Ditropan XL, Oxybutynin, Oxytrol, Anturol, Gelnique

Oxybutynin treats overactive bladder — including the sudden urge to urinate, leaking before you can reach the bathroom (urge incontinence), and going too frequently. Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) and immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are used for these symptoms. Oxytrol is approved for overactive bladder in men; Oxytrol for Women is approved for overactive bladder in women aged 18 and older.

Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) are also approved for children 6 years and older who have bladder overactivity caused by a neurological condition, such as spina bifida. Immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are indicated for bladder instability symptoms — including urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, and painful urination — in patients with neurogenic bladder conditions.
