Why this applies to Zopiclone

Zopiclone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and your sleep aid, zopiclone. Zopiclone is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and Sweet Annie may nudge that enzyme in either direction. In lab studies, the artemisinin in this herb seemed to speed the enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seemed to slow it down. So honestly, we can't predict which way it would go in a real person.

If Sweet Annie slowed your breakdown of zopiclone, you might feel extra drowsy, groggy in the morning, dizzy, or more wobbly on your feet. If it sped things up, the sleep benefit could fade. The good news: this is based only on test-tube and animal data, not on people. Still, since it's hard to call, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
