Why this applies to Diazepam

Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and your Valium (diazepam). Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break diazepam down. Sweet Annie may tinker with that enzyme, but the lab data points in two opposite directions. One constituent (artemisinin) seemed to speed the enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seemed to slow it down. So honestly, nobody can say for sure which way it would push diazepam in a real person.

If the enzyme were sped up, your diazepam could clear faster and feel less effective. If it were slowed, levels could climb, bringing more drowsiness, dizziness, or unsteadiness. This is only test-tube evidence, so don't panic, but do run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
