Saigon Cinnamon and Levofloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Saigon cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: this isn't about Saigon cinnamon changing how levofloxacin works in your body. Instead, it's about both being potentially hard on the liver at the same time. Levofloxacin, like other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, can occasionally stress the liver. Saigon cinnamon is a cassia cinnamon that's naturally high in coumarin, which in large or long-term doses has been linked to liver irritation in sensitive people. Put them together and the worry is an additive burden on the liver.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not strong human proof. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon supplements taken daily are the real question. Since levofloxacin is usually a short course, just check with your pharmacist before pairing them, and watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

About Saigon Cinnamon

What is Saigon Cinnamon?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.

About Levofloxacin

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Levaquin, Levaquin Injection, Leva-pak

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
