Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your nifedipine. Carob is rich in tannins and fiber, and lab research suggests these can bind things in your gut and slow down how well some swallowed substances get absorbed. The concern here is the same idea applied to your blood pressure pill: if carob soaks up part of the dose, a little less nifedipine might reach your bloodstream, which could mean slightly weaker control of your blood pressure or chest pain.

Honestly, this is a theoretical, minor worry based only on lab and mineral studies, not on real cases with nifedipine. Small culinary amounts are unlikely to cause trouble. To be safe, you can simply space them out, taking carob about 30 to 60 minutes after your medicine. If you use carob regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
