Here's something a little different about coffee and verapamil: the medication actually affects the coffee more than the coffee affects the medication. Verapamil can slow down how your body clears caffeine, raising the caffeine in your blood by roughly 25 percent. So your usual two cups may hit a bit harder than they used to.

In real life, that can mean feeling more jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or some extra restlessness. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not a dangerous interaction, and many people tolerate their normal coffee just fine. If you notice you feel wired or your heart is fluttering, try cutting back a bit and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor. Don't change your verapamil on your own.

About Verapamil

What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
