Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical picture with your Toujeo (insulin glargine). This is a long-acting basal insulin that lowers your blood sugar steadily through the day. The caffeine in coffee can nudge blood sugar in either direction, so the worry isn't that coffee changes how your insulin is processed. Instead, it's that caffeine itself can sometimes raise blood sugar (by making your body a bit less sensitive to insulin) or, in other cases, slightly lower it.

The good news: this is rated minor and unlikely, and the evidence is on the weaker side. For most people, a usual cup or two won't throw off your numbers. The bigger caution is that caffeine jitters can feel a lot like a low blood sugar, which can be confusing. If you drink a lot of coffee or notice your readings bouncing, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
