Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a simple one: those caffeine pills like Vivarin already give you a solid dose of the very same stimulant that's in your coffee. So when you wash a pill down with a cup or two, you're essentially stacking caffeine on top of caffeine. The two add together, which is exactly why this pairing is flagged.

What that usually feels like is more of caffeine's familiar side effects: a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, shaky hands, trouble sleeping, an upset stomach, or feeling anxious and wired. None of this is exotic, it's just too much of a good thing. If you take a caffeine tablet, it's smart to go easy on the coffee that day, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure about your total intake.

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
