Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: your morning coffee and your Tanzeum (albiglutide) injection don't really clash in any direct way. Albiglutide is an injected medicine that helps your pancreas release insulin when your blood sugar is high, and the caffeine in coffee isn't broken down by the same pathways or going to ramp it up or shut it down.

The only theoretical concern is that caffeine itself can nudge blood sugar slightly up or down in some people, which could make your numbers a touch less predictable. The evidence for this is weak and the effect is usually minor, especially with normal coffee amounts. If you drink a lot of caffeine or notice swings in your readings, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, but there's no need to give up your coffee.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albiglutide page

“People injecting albiglutide (Tanzeum) once a week for type 2 diabetes are often the same people eyeing supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is exactly where this list calls for real vigilance. Every one of the 239 ingredients on file touches glucose control in some way, most by adding to albiglutide's glucose-lowerin…”

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
