Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a fun twist: in this pairing, it's actually your coffee that gets affected, not your birth control. The estrogen in combined birth control pills slows down the liver enzyme that clears caffeine, so caffeine can hang around in your body 40% to 65% longer than usual. Your pill keeps working just fine.

What this means in real life is that the same two or three cups you always drink may hit harder. You might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired and anxious. If that sounds like you, simply easing back on coffee usually does the trick. There's no need to change your pill, but feel free to check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

About Coffee

What is Coffee?

  • Alertness and reducing fatigue
  • Mental focus and concentration
  • Athletic performance
  • Headache relief
  • Weight management

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage made from roasted coffee beans, valued mainly for its caffeine, which boosts alertness and energy. For most healthy adults, moderate coffee intake is generally safe and may have some health benefits, but too much can cause jitteriness, poor sleep, and a faster heartbeat. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine should limit their intake and check with a doctor or pharmacist.
