Why this applies to dabigatran

dabigatran falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Turmeric may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, research is conflicting.
Curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, has demonstrated antiplatelet effects in vitro. Furthermore, two case reports have found that taking turmeric along with warfarin or fluindione was associated with an increased international normalized ratio (INR). However, one clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking curcumin 500 mg daily for 3 weeks, alone or with aspirin 100 mg, does not increase antiplatelet effects or bleeding risk. It is possible that the dose of turmeric used in this study was too low to produce a notable effect.

Here's the simple version: dabigatran (Pradaxa) is already a blood thinner, and turmeric, especially in concentrated curcumin supplements, may have its own mild blood-thinning, anti-clotting action. Stack the two together and you could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher. With dabigatran that might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or in more serious cases blood in the urine or stool. Dabigatran works as-is, so this isn't a case of turmeric making it weaker.

That said, the evidence here is mixed and not very strong. A pinch of turmeric in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. The concern is daily high-dose supplements. Before adding one, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, turmeric might increase the absorption of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcuminoids and other constituents found in turmeric can inhibit P-glycoprotein expression and activity.

Here's the situation with turmeric and dabigatran (Pradaxa). Your body relies on a kind of cellular pump called P-glycoprotein to control how much dabigatran gets absorbed from your gut. Lab and animal studies hint that the curcumin in turmeric can slow that pump down. If that happens in people, a bit more dabigatran could slip into your bloodstream, which in theory could nudge up the blood-thinning effect and the chance of easy bruising or bleeding.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is rated a minor, theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal work, not real patient studies. A little turmeric in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated curcumin capsules are where I'd be more cautious, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are approved for adults to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism (blood clots traveling through the body) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). Capsules are also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein, usually the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a clot in the lungs), to prevent those clots from coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

For children, the capsule form is approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism — blood clots in veins) and reducing recurrence in patients aged 8 to under 18. Pradaxa Oral Pellets are approved specifically for children aged 3 months to under 12 years for the same treatment and recurrence-prevention purposes.
