Here's the gist for taking turmeric alongside levonorgestrel (like Plan B or Mirena). This isn't about turmeric changing how well your contraceptive works. The concern is purely about the liver. There have been scattered reports that concentrated turmeric supplements, especially the high-dose, 'highly absorbable' formulas, can occasionally stress the liver. Pairing that with any medication that can also tax the liver theoretically adds up.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's anecdotal and largely theoretical, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The turmeric you sprinkle on food is not a worry at all. If you take strong curcumin capsules regularly, just give your pharmacist a heads-up, and watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Turmeric might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.

Here's the practical side for you. Levonorgestrel, the hormone in Plan B and similar morning-after pills, is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Turmeric can nudge that enzyme in either direction depending on the study, so the picture isn't clear-cut. If turmeric were to speed that enzyme up, your body could clear the levonorgestrel a bit faster, which in theory might make an emergency contraceptive dose less reliable.

That said, this concern comes mostly from lab and animal research, not from people taking Plan B. Everyday cooking with turmeric is very unlikely to matter. If you're using a single emergency dose and want peace of mind, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before mixing in concentrated turmeric capsules.

Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. About Levonorgestrel

What Is Levonorgestrel Used For?

Brand names: Plan B, Mirena, Levonelle One Step, Levonelle 1500, Norgeston, Skyla, Liletta, Kyleena

Levonorgestrel is used in two very different ways depending on the product. As an intrauterine system (IUS), Mirena and Liletta prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years and also treat heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years in people who choose intrauterine contraception. Kyleena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years, and Skyla prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years — neither Kyleena nor Skyla is indicated for heavy menstrual bleeding.

As an oral tablet, products such as AfterPill, AfterPlan, Amazon Basic Care Levonorgestrel, Econ Morning After, Emergency Contraceptive, and Empowered Choice are used as emergency (backup) contraception to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. The oral tablet is not intended for routine birth control.
