Alvimopan falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, turmeric might increase the absorption of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcuminoids and other constituents found in turmeric can inhibit P-glycoprotein expression and activity.

Here's the gist for alvimopan (Entereg): turmeric may gently block a tiny pump in your gut wall called P-glycoprotein. That pump normally shoves some of the drug back out, so if turmeric slows it down, a little more alvimopan could be absorbed than usual. In theory that means slightly stronger effects from the medication.

The good news is this is a minor concern, and it's based only on lab and animal studies, not real patients. Alvimopan is also usually given short-term in the hospital right after bowel surgery, so a food spice in your diet is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated turmeric capsules, just mention it to your surgical team or pharmacist so they're in the loop.

What Is Alvimopan Used For?

Brand name: Entereg

Alvimopan capsules are used in hospitals to help the digestive tract recover more quickly after surgery that involves removing part of the bowel (partial bowel resection with primary anastomosis — meaning the remaining ends are reconnected). After this type of surgery, the bowel often temporarily stops working, a condition called postoperative ileus.

This medication is only given during a short hospital stay and is not for long-term or home use.
