Why this applies to Desipramine

Desipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, turmeric might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. However, research is conflicting.
In vitro and animal research show that the turmeric constituent, curcumin, inhibits CYP1A2. However, other in vitro research suggests that curcumin does not significantly affect CYP1A2.

Here's the gist for you. Your body uses several liver enzymes to clear desipramine, and one of them is called CYP1A2. In lab and animal studies, the curcumin in turmeric can slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in your body, desipramine could build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual side effects like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

The good news: this is mostly theoretical, the research is conflicting, and it's rated minor. Sprinkling turmeric on your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin supplements are where I'd be a bit more thoughtful. Before starting one, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
