ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Alvimopan
Alvimopan falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with these two together. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can slow how fast things empty out of your stomach, which in theory could change how much alvimopan (Entereg) your body soaks up. Since alvimopan works locally in the bowel to help it wake up after surgery, anything that slows or blunts its absorption could make it a little less effective at getting you back to normal bowel movements.
That said, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not a proven problem, and the small amounts of xanthan gum found in foods are very unlikely to matter. If you're using thickened liquids or fiber supplements while on alvimopan, a simple fix is to space them out, taking xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your medicine. Check with your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

Alvimopan capsules are used in hospitals to help the digestive tract recover more quickly after surgery that involves removing part of the bowel (partial bowel resection with primary anastomosis — meaning the remaining ends are reconnected).
