These two interact in 5 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 5 Interactions?
Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 5 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 5 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 5Why this applies to Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol
Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Annovera is a vaginal ring that slowly releases two hormones, and like many estrogen-containing birth control products, it gets processed through your liver. The worry here isn't about turmeric changing your hormone levels. Instead, both turmeric (in concentrated, high-dose supplement forms) and estrogen products have each been linked, in rare cases, to liver irritation. Stacking two things that can stress the liver is the theoretical concern.
To be clear, this is based on anecdotal reports, not strong proof, and turmeric used as a spice in food is very unlikely to matter. Watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Before starting a concentrated turmeric supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 5Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Annovera releases two active hormones, segesterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol, and your body processes the estrogen part using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Turmeric may tug on that enzyme in either direction, so this isn't a clear-cut interaction. If turmeric slows the enzyme, hormone levels could edge up, which might mean more side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or headaches. If it speeds the enzyme up instead, levels could dip and birth control could become less reliable.
Here's the reassuring part: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, not solid human data. The turmeric you cook with is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin capsules are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
3 of 5Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and animal research show that the turmeric constituent, curcumin, inhibits CYP1A2. However, other in vitro research suggests that curcumin does not significantly affect CYP1A2.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
If you're using the Annovera ring (which slowly releases segesterone and ethinyl estradiol), here's the honest picture with turmeric. The concern on file is that curcumin, turmeric's main active compound, might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 that helps clear estrogen. In theory, slower clearance could nudge hormone levels up a bit, which can mean more of the usual estrogen-type effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.
The key word is theoretical. This comes only from lab and animal studies, and even those disagree, so real-world impact is likely small. Everyday turmeric in cooking is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated curcumin capsules daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
4 of 5Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcuminoids and other constituents found in turmeric can inhibit P-glycoprotein expression and activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version on pairing turmeric with Annovera (segesterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol). One protein in your body, called P-glycoprotein, helps move certain drugs around and limit how much gets absorbed. In lab and animal studies, the curcumin in turmeric seems to block that protein a little. The thinking is that this could let slightly more of your hormones get absorbed, which in theory might mean more typical estrogen-related side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headache, or spotting.
That said, this is only theoretical and comes from test-tube and animal work, not from people. The everyday amount you'd use as a spice in cooking is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated turmeric or curcumin capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh in.

ESTROGENS
5 of 5Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under ESTROGENS.
In vitro research shows that curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, displaces the binding of estrogen to its receptors.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Annovera is a vaginal ring that releases two hormones, an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (segesterone), to prevent pregnancy. The concern here is mostly theoretical. In lab dishes, curcumin (the active part of turmeric) can nudge estrogen off its receptors, so in theory very large turmeric doses might slightly blunt the estrogen part of your ring. To be clear, this has only been seen in test-tube studies, not in real people using birth control.
The amount of turmeric you get from cooking is not a worry at all. If you're thinking about a concentrated curcumin supplement, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, but there's no strong evidence it would make your ring fail. Don't change anything on your own.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
