STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine

Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo medicine has two decongestant ingredients, phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine, that already give your system a little push (think faster heartbeat, jittery feelings, higher blood pressure). Yerba mate brings its own kick because it's loaded with caffeine. Stack a stimulating supplement on top of stimulating decongestants and the effects can pile up.

So the worry here isn't your body breaking the drug down differently, it's simply too much stimulation at once. You might notice a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, restlessness, shakiness, or a bump in blood pressure. This is based mostly on expert opinion rather than hard studies, so a single cup may be no big deal for many folks. Still, if you take this medicine often or have heart or blood pressure issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Brompheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine also falls under PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE.

Theoretically, phenylpropanolamine might increase the risk of hypertension as well as the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Concomitant use of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine might cause an additive increase in blood pressure. Phenylpropanolamine also seems to increase caffeine serum levels.

Here's the thing to know about this combo: your medicine contains decongestants (phenylpropanolamine and phenylephrine) that already nudge your blood pressure and heart rate upward. Yerba mate carries a real dose of caffeine, and stacking the two can add up. You might notice a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure. There's also a wrinkle: phenylpropanolamine seems to slow how your body clears caffeine, so the caffeine can hang around longer and hit harder.

This isn't a dangerous reaction for most healthy folks, but if you have high blood pressure or heart concerns, it matters more. I wouldn't tell you to change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially before reaching for concentrated mate supplements rather than a casual cup.

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
