Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist with Hetlioz (tasimelteon) and yerba mate. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear tasimelteon out of your system. Lab studies (just test-tube work, not people) suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more tasimelteon hang around, which might make its effects, mostly grogginess, drowsiness, or a heavy-headed feeling the next morning, a touch stronger.

I want to keep this in perspective: the evidence here is weak and only theoretical, and it's rated a minor interaction. A cup of mate now and then is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since tasimelteon already affects your sleep and alertness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

What Is Tasimelteon Used For?

Brand names: Hetlioz, Hetlioz Lq

Tasimelteon capsules are approved to treat Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder (Non-24) in adults. Non-24 is a condition where the body's internal clock does not align with the normal 24-hour day, causing sleep and wake times to shift continuously.

Hetlioz capsules are also approved to treat nighttime sleep disturbances in Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) in patients 16 years of age and older. Hetlioz LQ oral suspension is approved specifically for nighttime sleep disturbances in SMS in pediatric patients ages 3 to 15 years.
