Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.

Here's the thing about pairing yerba mate with mexiletine: it actually runs the opposite direction from what most people assume. Mexiletine doesn't get supercharged here. Instead, mexiletine is one of those medicines that can slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine. Since yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, your body may hang onto that caffeine longer than usual.

In plain terms, your mate could hit harder and last longer, leaving you feeling jittery, restless, fast-heartbeat, or wide awake at bedtime. This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how the drugs work, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Still, with a heart-rhythm drug, it's smart to keep your mate modest and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the thing to know about pairing your mate with mexiletine: it's the caffeine that builds up, not the heart medicine. Mexiletine slows down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly half in studies. So a cup of yerba mate may hit you harder and linger longer than usual.

In real life that can mean feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or just feeling wired and restless. This is rated a minor, mostly theoretical interaction, so it's not dangerous for most people, but since you're already on a medicine for heart rhythm, extra caffeine isn't ideal. If you notice these effects, ease back on the mate and chat with your pharmacist or doctor about a comfortable amount.

About Mexiletine

What Is Mexiletine Used For?

Brand name: Mexitil

Mexiletine Hydrochloride capsules are indicated for the treatment of documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — for example, sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers). Because mexiletine itself can trigger arrhythmias, it is not recommended for minor or symptom-free irregular heartbeats.

Treatment is started in a hospital setting so heart rhythm can be monitored closely. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including mexiletine, have not been shown to improve overall survival in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
