Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Nitrazepam is a benzodiazepine sleep aid that already slows down your brain and body. The concern here is simple: goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed its own mild calming, sedative effect. Stack that on top of nitrazepam and, in theory, you could feel extra drowsy, more groggy in the morning, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet (which raises fall risk, especially for older folks).

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is a theoretical interaction based on how things work in the lab, and the added sedation has not actually been reported in people. So it is worth being aware of, not panicking over. If you take both, keep an eye on how sleepy you feel and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
