Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: temazepam (Restoril) already calms your brain to help you sleep, and goldenseal contains a compound called berberine that, at least in animal studies, seems to have a mild calming effect of its own. Put the two together and the worry is that they could add up, leaving you more drowsy than you bargained for, with possible next-day grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's a theoretical concern. The sedation from berberine has been seen in lab animals, not reported in people. So this isn't a red-alert situation. Still, since temazepam is a sleep medicine, I'd mention the goldenseal to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, just to be safe.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Temazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Goldenseal might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and in vitro research shows that goldenseal inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and increases serum levels of CYP3A4 substrates, such as midazolam. However, in one small clinical study, goldenseal did not affect the levels of indinavir, a CYP3A4 substrate, in healthy volunteers. This is likely due to the fact that indinavir has a high oral bioavailability, making it an inadequate probe for CYP3A4 interactions and/or that it is primarily metabolized by hepatic CYP3A, while goldenseal has more potential to inhibit intestinal CYP3A enzyme activity. Both goldenseal extract and its isolated constituents berberine and hydrastine inhibit CYP3A, with hydrastine possibly having more inhibitory potential than berberine.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear temazepam. Goldenseal tends to slow that enzyme down. When that pathway is blocked, temazepam can hang around longer than usual, so the medicine's effects may feel stronger.

For a sleep aid like Restoril, that could mean extra drowsiness, a groggy or hungover feeling the next morning, dizziness, or trouble with balance and concentration. Worth knowing: temazepam is actually cleared mainly by a different process (it gets bound to a sugar molecule, not heavily by CYP3A4), so this interaction may be milder for temazepam than for some other benzodiazepines. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, especially if you're older or take other sedating medicines.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
