Here's the simple version: Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is already a stimulant that revs up your brain and body, and yerba mate brings its own dose of caffeine to the party. Stack the two together and you're essentially layering one stimulant on top of another. That can make the usual Focalin side effects more noticeable, things like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, anxiety, higher blood pressure, and trouble falling asleep at night.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly based on expert reasoning rather than hard studies, so it's not a dangerous combo for most people. A cup now and then is unlikely to be a big deal, but daily or heavy mate drinking is worth mentioning to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you already feel wired.

What Is Dexmethylphenidate Used For?

Brand name: Focalin

Dexmethylphenidate — available as tablets (Focalin, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride) and extended-release capsules (Focalin XR, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride Extended-Release) — is approved to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults.

The extended-release capsule formulations are not recommended for children younger than 6 years old, because younger children tend to have higher drug exposure in their bodies and a greater chance of side effects such as weight loss compared to older children at the same dose.
