Atorvastatin Calcium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lab studies suggest yerba mate may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more atorvastatin linger in your system, which might nudge up the risk of statin side effects like muscle aches, soreness, or weakness.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. A few cups of mate are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you regularly drink large amounts or take concentrated mate supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, and report any unexplained muscle pain rather than changing anything on your own.

About Atorvastatin

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Lipitor

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
