Yohimbine, a constituent of Rauvolfia vomitoria, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking Rauvolfia vomitoria with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.

Here's the concern with pairing Rauvolfia vomitoria and modafinil (Provigil). Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting medicine that gently revs up your nervous system. Rauvolfia contains yohimbine-like compounds that can also stimulate the body and push blood pressure up. Stacked together, those effects can add up, so you might see a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a noticeable rise in blood pressure.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not a flood of patient reports. Still, because the combined effect could be significant, it's worth running by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two, especially if you already deal with high blood pressure or a racy heart.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
