Here's the gist: both Rauvolfia vomitoria (whose main alkaloid is reserpine) and fluphenazine push on the same parts of your nervous system. Fluphenazine calms an overactive dopamine system, and reserpine drains those same chemical messengers. Stack them together and you may get more of the same effects piled on top of each other.

In real-world terms, that could mean stronger drops in blood pressure, more dizziness or fainting, heavy sedation, and a higher chance of stiff muscles or restless, slowed movements. To be fair, this warning is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than firm studies, so don't panic. But Rauvolfia is potent and not a casual supplement. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, Rauvolfia vomitoria might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for fluphenazine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear this antipsychotic from your body. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a bit of yohimbine, and in lab (test-tube) studies yohimbine can slow that same enzyme down. If that happens in a real person, fluphenazine could build up a little and hit harder than expected.

In plain terms, that might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, or stiff, restless, or shaky movements (the muscle side effects this drug is known for). I want to stress this is theoretical, based only on lab data, so it's a maybe, not a sure thing. Still, both of these strongly affect blood pressure and the nervous system, so please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
