Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.

Theoretically, Rauvolfia vomitoria might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for your cough medicine. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down dextromethorphan and clear it out. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a small amount of yohimbine, which in lab studies appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happens in real life, dextromethorphan could linger longer and build up, making its effects stronger than expected.

What might that feel like? Possibly more drowsiness, dizziness, or, at higher levels, restlessness, confusion, or feeling spacey. I'll be honest with you though: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since this plant is potent on its own, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Dextromethorphan Used For?

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
