Spironolactone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.

Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a very small amount of the drug reserpine. Reserpine can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Here's the simple version: Rauvolfia vomitoria naturally contains a little reserpine, which lowers blood pressure on its own. Your spironolactone is also doing some of that same work, especially if you're taking it for high blood pressure or heart failure. Stack the two together and they may push your blood pressure down further than expected.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy or lightheaded, especially when standing up quickly, and you could feel unusually tired or even faint. I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds work rather than strong studies, and the reserpine amount in the plant is small. Still, since spironolactone already affects blood pressure and potassium, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
