Here's the simple version: diazepam (Valium) already calms down activity in your brain, which is why it can make you drowsy, foggy, or relaxed to the point of feeling slowed down. Rauvolfia vomitoria, the root that contains reserpine, seems to have its own calming, sedative effect too. Stack the two together and the worry is that those effects could pile on top of each other.

That could mean more sleepiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, slowed reflexes, or feeling unsteady on your feet. I want to be honest, though: this concern comes from animal research and how these compounds behave, not from solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since Rauvolfia is a potent plant and diazepam is no lightweight either, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
