These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with whole categories of medication. Methamphetamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rauvolfia Vomitoria in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).
STIMULANT DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Rauvolfia Vomitoria interacts with.
Yohimbine, a constituent of Rauvolfia vomitoria, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking Rauvolfia vomitoria with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the concern with pairing Rauvolfia vomitoria and methamphetamine (Desoxyn). Methamphetamine is already a powerful stimulant that revs up your nervous system, lifting heart rate and blood pressure. Rauvolfia contains yohimbine-related compounds that can also stimulate the body and push blood pressure up. Stack the two together and those effects can pile on top of each other.
In real terms, that could mean a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and a worrying spike in blood pressure. I'll be honest: this warning is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than solid human studies. Still, because the potential outcome is serious, I'd want you to check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Methamphetamine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
Rauvolfia vomitoria contains small amounts of the drug yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Desoxyn (methamphetamine): your body partly clears it using an enzyme called CYP2D6. Rauvolfia vomitoria contains a small amount of yohimbine, which in lab studies appears to slow that enzyme down. If CYP2D6 is working slower, methamphetamine could hang around longer and hit harder. Methamphetamine is active on its own (not a prodrug), so blocking its breakdown tends to boost its effects.
In real life that could mean more of the usual stimulant side effects: a racing or pounding heart, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. That said, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube data, so don't panic. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining the two.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and agitation
- Sleep problems
- Mental health symptoms (traditional use)
- Fever and general ailments
Rauvolfia vomitoria is an African shrub whose root contains powerful alkaloids, including reserpine, that have historically been used for high blood pressure and agitation. Always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before using it.
