Why this applies to Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the situation with Fluphenazine and DMAA. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear fluphenazine out of your body. In lab studies, DMAA appears to block that enzyme. If it does the same thing in real life, fluphenazine could build up higher than expected, which may mean stronger side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, muscle stiffness, or restless, twitchy movements.

There's a second worry. DMAA is a powerful, FDA-banned stimulant that raises heart rate and blood pressure, so pairing it with any medication is risky on its own. Keep in mind this interaction is theoretical, based only on lab data, not people. Still, DMAA simply isn't safe, so please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with fluphenazine.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
