Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA is thought to have stimulant effects. There is concern that taking 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some preliminary research shows that taking 1,3-DMAA 50 mg daily in combination with caffeine 250 mg daily does not increase respiratory rate, blood pressure, or other cardiovascular outcomes compared to taking caffeine alone in healthy men. However, a number of cardiovascular side effects have been reported for patients taking 1,3-DMAA in combination with other stimulants including caffeine. Theoretically, combining 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.

Here's the simple version: both DMAA and modafinil rev up your system. DMAA is a powerful stimulant that pushes your 'fight or flight' chemicals, which can tighten blood vessels, raise blood pressure, and speed up your heart. Modafinil is a wakefulness drug, and while it works differently, it can also nudge your heart rate and blood pressure upward. Stack the two and you may be doubling up on that strain.

So the concern is mainly your heart and blood pressure: think racing heartbeat, jitteriness, chest discomfort, or a spike in blood pressure. To be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how these stimulants behave, not hard proof. But here's my bigger worry: DMAA itself has been banned by the FDA and tied to serious heart events and even deaths, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with your modafinil.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
