Phenylephrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA is thought to have stimulant effects. There is concern that taking 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some preliminary research shows that taking 1,3-DMAA 50 mg daily in combination with caffeine 250 mg daily does not increase respiratory rate, blood pressure, or other cardiovascular outcomes compared to taking caffeine alone in healthy men. However, a number of cardiovascular side effects have been reported for patients taking 1,3-DMAA in combination with other stimulants including caffeine. Theoretically, combining 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.

Here's the simple version: phenylephrine (like Sudafed PE) is itself a decongestant that works by tightening blood vessels, which can nudge up your blood pressure and heart rate. DMAA is a powerful stimulant that does much the same thing through your body's fight or flight system. Stack the two together and you're essentially doubling up on that pressure raising effect.

The concern is added strain on your heart and blood vessels: think racing heartbeat, palpitations, headache, jitteriness, or a spike in blood pressure. This is based mostly on how these substances work rather than hard studies, so it's theoretical. But honestly, DMAA has been banned by the FDA as unsafe, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything like this.

What Is Phenylephrine Used For?

Brand names: Gilchew, AH Chew D, Gilchew IR, Sudafed PE, Biorphen

Phenylephrine is used in a number of different forms for different purposes. Intravenous (IV) phenylephrine — including products like Biorphen and Immphentiv — is given in hospital settings to raise blood pressure in adults when it drops dangerously low due to blood vessel widening (vasodilation), such as during anesthesia. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Injection 10 mg/mL is also approved for use in septic shock (a life-threatening infection that causes a severe drop in blood pressure).

Nasal spray and drop products (such as Neo-Synephrine and Equate Nasal) temporarily relieve nasal congestion from colds, hay fever, or upper respiratory allergies. Ophthalmic (eye drop) solutions dilate the pupil for eye exams. Rectal suppository products (such as Preparation H and ReVIVOL-XR) help relieve itching, burning, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
