Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP3A4 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates, but this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the gist with Modafinil and Bulbine natalensis. Your body clears modafinil partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, this supplement appears to speed that enzyme up. If it does the same thing in people, it could break modafinil down a little faster, which might leave you with less wakefulness benefit. That could mean more of the daytime sleepiness you're trying to control.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theory based on test-tube work, not human studies, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. It's also worth knowing this plant has raised liver and kidney safety questions in animals. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your modafinil on your own.

Here's the gist with Bulbine natalensis and modafinil. Modafinil is partly moved around your body by a transporter called P-glycoprotein. In lab (test tube) studies, this supplement appears to nudge that transporter to work harder. If that effect held true in people, it could move modafinil out faster and possibly make it work a little less well, meaning you might feel sleepier than expected.

I want to be honest though: this is purely theoretical and comes only from cell studies, not from real patients, so we don't actually know if it matters. On top of that, animal research has flagged possible liver and kidney concerns with this supplement. Before combining the two, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
