Armodafinil falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the gist with Danshen and armodafinil (Nuvigil). Danshen may slow down a transporter pump called p-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs out of your body. When that pump is blocked, a drug it handles can build up a bit higher than usual. In one small study, Danshen raised levels of another p-glycoprotein drug by roughly a third.

So in theory, combining the two could leave a little more armodafinil in your system, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like trouble sleeping, headache, jitteriness, a racing heart, or feeling anxious. Keep in mind this is based on limited, lower-quality evidence, and armodafinil isn't mainly cleared by this pump, so any change is likely modest. Still, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

Armodafinil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the gist: your body clears armodafinil using a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4. Danshen seems to nudge that enzyme in two different directions depending on how long you take it. In a small study, taking danshen daily for about 10 to 14 days sped up this enzyme, which could mean your body breaks armodafinil down faster. If that happens, armodafinil might not keep you as alert, and you could feel sleepier during the day than you'd expect.

Oddly, a single dose of danshen had the opposite effect and could raise levels, which might bring on more headache, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. Because the timing matters and the research is limited, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
