Acetylsalicylic acid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.

Here's the gist: aspirin already works by making your blood platelets less sticky, which is why it helps prevent clots but can also lead to bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation. Danshen has its own blood-thinning effect, so pairing the two could push your blood toward thinning more than you want. Together they may add up, raising the chance of unwanted bleeding.

I'll be honest about the evidence: this concern comes mostly from animal studies and case reports, not large human trials, so it's more of a reasonable caution than a proven danger. Still, since bleeding can be serious, I wouldn't combine them on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels of aspirin and the risk of bleeding.
Research in healthy adult males shows that taking a combination of danshen and kudzu with aspirin increases plasma aspirin area under the curve by approximately 3.4-fold. Animal research also shows that taking a combination of danshen and kudzu (danshen-gegen formula) with aspirin increases maximal blood levels of aspirin and salicylic acid by approximately 4-fold and 3.7-fold, respectively, without impacting blood loss. Taking danshen increases the antiplatelet activity of aspirin and might increase the side effects of aspirin.

Here's the gist if you take aspirin (Entrophen) and are thinking about Danshen. Danshen seems to do two things at once. First, it appears to push more aspirin into your bloodstream. In one human study, combining Danshen (with kudzu) and aspirin raised aspirin blood levels by about 3 to 4 times. Second, Danshen itself can thin the blood a bit, on top of what aspirin already does.

Together, that means a higher chance of bleeding-type problems: easy bruising, nosebleeds, stomach upset or stomach bleeding, and cuts that are slow to stop. The evidence here is moderate and partly theoretical, so don't panic, but it's a real concern worth flagging. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, rather than changing anything on your own.
