Danshen + Ibrutinib
Ibrutinib brand name: Imbruvica.
Ibrutinib falls into 2 drug categories that Danshen can interact with; the most serious is rated major. Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Danshen interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibrutinib falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Danshen in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ibrutinib
Ibrutinib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing worth knowing about ibrutinib (Imbruvica): on its own, it can already raise your risk of bleeding and bruising. That's a well-known effect of this drug because of how it affects platelets, the tiny cells that help your blood clot. Danshen has its own reputation for thinning the blood and slowing clotting, so stacking the two together could add up and make bleeding problems more likely.
In real life that might look like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or in rarer cases something more serious. To be fair, the evidence here is mostly theoretical and based on anecdotes and animal studies, not strong human trials. Still, with a cancer medicine like this, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Ibrutinib also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down ibrutinib (Imbruvica). Danshen can tug on that enzyme in two different directions, which makes things tricky. After taking it steadily for a week or two, danshen seems to speed up CYP3A4 in the gut, which could clear ibrutinib faster and possibly weaken how well your cancer treatment works. But a single dose appears to do the opposite, slowing breakdown and raising ibrutinib levels, which can mean more bruising, bleeding, diarrhea, or infections.
The evidence here is early and was studied with a different drug, not ibrutinib itself. Still, because ibrutinib treats serious conditions, I'd hold off on danshen and check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibrutinib page
“Ibrutinib (Imbruvica) treats blood cancers such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and because the drug itself makes bruising and bleeding more likely, adding the wrong supplement here can carry real consequences. Most of the entries below have blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity that stacks on top of that built-in bleeding risk.”

About Danshen
What is Danshen?
- Heart and circulation support
- Angina (chest pain)
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress
- Liver health
Danshen is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for heart and circulation problems. Some early research is promising, but the evidence is not strong enough to confirm it works for any condition, and it may affect blood clotting. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.
About Ibrutinib
What Is Ibrutinib Used For?
Brand name: Imbruvica
Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is approved for adult patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) / small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), including those with a specific genetic change called 17p deletion, and for adult patients with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare type of blood cancer.
Imbruvica is also approved for chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) — a complication that can occur after a stem cell transplant — in adults and children aged 1 year and older whose condition did not respond to at least one prior treatment.
