Minocycline falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.

Here's an honest heads-up about this one. Our database files Minocycline under blood thinners, but that's a category placeholder. Minocycline is actually an antibiotic from the tetracycline family, used for things like acne, respiratory infections, and tick-borne illnesses. It isn't a true anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug, and it doesn't need to be activated in your body the way a prodrug does.

So the bleeding concern that's been raised for Danshen really applies to actual blood thinners, not to Minocycline directly. The evidence here is weak and largely theoretical anyway. If you take Danshen, the bigger picture is that it may nudge up bleeding risk on its own. I'd run your full medication list past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the gist for you. Minocycline is partly moved around your body by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a little pump that ushers drugs out. Danshen seems to slow that pump down. In a small study, danshen raised levels of another drug handled by this same pump by roughly a third. So in theory, danshen could nudge minocycline levels up a bit, meaning more of the drug hangs around.

If that happened, you might notice more of minocycline's usual side effects, like dizziness, a spinning feeling (vertigo), nausea, or stomach upset. This is based on limited, lower-quality evidence and is only possible, not certain. Still, since danshen can also affect blood clotting, I'd run this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Vectrin, Dynacin, Minocin, Minocin IV, Solodyn, Acnamino MR, Minocin MR, Sebomin MR, Aknemin, Arestin Miscrosperes, Amzeeq, Zilxi

Oral and intravenous minocycline products treat many serious bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum and nongonococcal urethritis, plague, cholera, brucellosis, tularemia, and others caused by susceptible organisms. MINOCIN Intravenous is used when oral therapy is not adequate or tolerated.

Extended-release oral minocycline tablets are indicated specifically for inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older — not for treating infections. AMZEEQ (topical foam) treats inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older. ZILXI (topical foam) and EMROSI (oral capsule) are indicated for inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. ARESTIN (oral powder placed by a dental professional) is used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depth in adult periodontitis.
