Danshen + Pentoxifylline
Pentoxifylline brand name: Trental.
Danshen has a major interaction with Pentoxifylline. Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Pentoxifylline
Pentoxifylline falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind: Pentoxifylline already thins your blood by making it less sticky so it flows better through small vessels. Danshen seems to work in a similar direction. It may slow down clotting too. So when you stack the two, those effects can add up and push you toward easier bruising or bleeding.
I'll be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and anecdotal, not proven in solid human studies. Still, since both can affect clotting, I'd want you to be cautious. Watch for warning signs like unusual bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark stools. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take anything else that affects bleeding.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pentoxifylline page
“Pentoxifylline (Trental) improves blood flow in people with poor leg circulation partly by making platelets less sticky, so treat this list as one to read carefully rather than skim. Of the 218 supplements on file, 202 can also slow clotting, which means adding them stacks bleeding risk on bleeding risk.”

About Danshen
What is Danshen?
- Heart and circulation support
- Angina (chest pain)
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress
- Liver health
Danshen is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for heart and circulation problems. Some early research is promising, but the evidence is not strong enough to confirm it works for any condition, and it may affect blood clotting. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.
About Pentoxifylline
What Is Pentoxifylline Used For?
Brand name: Trental
Pentoxifylline extended-release tablets treat intermittent claudication. This is cramping leg pain during walking that comes from chronic occlusive arterial disease (long-term blockage of arteries) in the limbs.
It can improve function and symptoms. It is not meant to replace more definitive treatment, such as surgical bypass or removal of arterial blockages, in peripheral vascular disease.
