Abiraterone Acetate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the gist for abiraterone (Yonsa), your prostate cancer medicine. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to handle abiraterone, and Danshen can nudge that same enzyme. The tricky part is that Danshen pushes in two directions. In one small study, taking it regularly for a week or two sped up CYP3A4, which could lower your abiraterone levels and make it work less well. A single dose did the opposite and could raise levels, which might mean more side effects like fatigue, high blood pressure, swelling, or changes in your potassium and liver tests.

This is based on limited research, not a perfect match for abiraterone, so it's possible rather than certain. Please don't change anything on your own. Just run Danshen by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Abiraterone

What Is Abiraterone Used For?

Brand names: Zytiga, Yonsa

Abiraterone acetate tablets are used to treat two types of advanced prostate cancer: metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC — cancer that has spread and keeps growing despite low testosterone levels) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC — cancer that has spread but still responds to hormone-lowering treatment). It is always taken together with a corticosteroid — most products pair with prednisone, while Yonsa is specifically indicated with methylprednisolone.

All products — including Abiraterone, Abiraterone Acetate, Abirtega, Yonsa, and Zytiga — are taken by mouth as a tablet. Yonsa is approved only for metastatic CRPC, while the other products (Abiraterone, Abiraterone Acetate, Abirtega, and Zytiga) are approved for both metastatic CRPC and metastatic high-risk CSPC.
