Doxycycline falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the gist: Danshen may slow down a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs out of your body. In one small study, people who took danshen for ten days had higher blood levels of a P-glycoprotein drug. Doxycycline is handled in part by this same pump, so in theory danshen could nudge your doxycycline levels up a bit.

If that happens, you might notice more of doxycycline's usual side effects, like stomach upset, nausea, or sun sensitivity. The evidence here is limited and on the weaker side, and doxycycline isn't a prodrug, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since danshen can also affect blood clotting, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
