Danshen + Trimipramine
Trimipramine brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp.
Danshen has a moderate interaction with Trimipramine. Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Trimipramine
Trimipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: lab studies suggest Danshen may block an enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear trimipramine. If that enzyme slows down, trimipramine could build up a bit more than usual. Since this is a tricyclic antidepressant, higher levels can mean stronger side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. So far this has only been seen in test-tube and animal research, never confirmed in real people, so it's theoretical. Still, because tricyclics can be sensitive to changes, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Please don't change your dose on your own.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trimipramine page
“If you take trimipramine (Surmontil), a tricyclic antidepressant, read this list carefully. Nine of the 139 supplements and herbs on file are rated major, and most touch the heart: several, grapefruit among them, can stretch the QT interval, the heart's electrical reset time, and raise the risk of a dangerous rhythm.”

About Danshen
What is Danshen?
- Heart and circulation support
- Angina (chest pain)
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress
- Liver health
Danshen is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for heart and circulation problems. Some early research is promising, but the evidence is not strong enough to confirm it works for any condition, and it may affect blood clotting. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.
About Trimipramine
What Is Trimipramine Used For?
Brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp
Trimipramine capsules are used to relieve the symptoms of depression. Both supported products (Trimipramine and Trimipramine Maleate oral capsules) carry this same use.
Depression with an “endogenous” pattern is more likely to improve than other depressive states. In the label’s studies, it worked about as well as amitriptyline in less-depressed outpatients, but somewhat less well in more severely depressed ones. In hospitalized patients, it worked about as well as imipramine.

Trimipramine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 3 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Trimipramine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Danshen — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
