Beclomethasone dipropionate falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the good news for your inhaler. Danshen may gently slow down a transporter called p-glycoprotein, which can let certain medicines build up a bit in the body. In a small study, danshen raised blood levels of a p-glycoprotein drug by about a third. Beclomethasone (Qvar, QNASL) is mostly inhaled or sprayed in the nose and acts right where it lands in your airways, so very little reaches your bloodstream to begin with.

Because of that, this interaction is unlikely to cause noticeable trouble for most people using beclomethasone as directed. Theoretically, more steroid in your system could mean things like throat irritation, hoarseness, or mouth thrush. If you take danshen regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on you.

Beclomethasone dipropionate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the good news for you: beclomethasone (Qvar, QNASL) is an inhaled steroid that mostly works right where you spray it, in your airways or nose. Even though your body uses the CYP3A4 enzyme to break down the small amount that reaches your bloodstream, the medicine acts locally, so changes in that enzyme usually have little effect on how well it controls your asthma.

The research on Danshen is mixed. Taking it for a couple of weeks may speed up CYP3A4 and lower drug levels, while a single dose may raise them. With beclomethasone, this isn't expected to cause a meaningful problem for most people. Still, it's smart to mention Danshen to your pharmacist or doctor, especially since Danshen can also thin the blood.

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Qvar, QNASL

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
