Ibrutinib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Forsythia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking forsythia with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Forsythia might reduce platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth knowing about Imbruvica (ibrutinib). On its own, this medication can already make you bleed and bruise more easily, since it affects how your platelets stick together. Forsythia, in lab studies, has also shown a mild ability to slow platelet clumping by blocking something called platelet activating factor. So the concern is simple: stacking two things that both nudge bleeding in the same direction could add up.

That said, this is theoretical and considered unlikely. The evidence comes from test-tube and animal work, not real patients, and a culinary or small herbal amount probably won't matter much. Still, because ibrutinib bleeding can be serious, I'd run any forsythia supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Ibrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Imbruvica

Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is used in adults to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), including cases with a specific genetic change called 17p deletion. It is also used in adults to treat Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare type of slow-growing blood cancer.

Imbruvica is also approved for adults and children aged 1 year and older with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) — a serious immune complication that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant — when at least one prior treatment has not worked.
