Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Forsythia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking forsythia with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Forsythia might reduce platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the situation with Defibrotide Sodium (Defitelio). This is a powerful clot-preventing medicine given by IV in the hospital, usually for a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. On its own it already lowers the body's ability to form clots, which means bleeding is the main thing the medical team watches for.

Forsythia, in lab studies, may slightly reduce how well platelets clump together. So in theory, stacking it on top of defibrotide could add to the bleeding risk (think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's harder to stop). I'd stress that this is theoretical, based only on lab and animal data, and considered unlikely. Honestly, anyone on defibrotide is in the hospital under close monitoring, so please just let that team know before using any herbal product.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
