Anagrelide falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Forsythia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking forsythia with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation. Forsythia might reduce platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the gist with anagrelide (Agrylin): you take it to lower your platelet count, and beyond that, anagrelide can also make the platelets you do have a little less sticky. Forsythia, at least in lab studies, may also nudge platelets toward sticking together less by blocking something called platelet activating factor. Stack those two together and, in theory, you could bruise or bleed a bit more easily.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern rests on test tube and animal data, not real human cases, and it's rated as unlikely. Still, since bleeding is already something we watch for with anagrelide, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding forsythia, and let them know if you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or any unusual bleeding.

What Is Anagrelide Used For?

Brand name: Agrylin

Anagrelide — sold as Agrylin and as generic anagrelide capsules — is used to treat thrombocythemia secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms. That means it's prescribed when a bone marrow disorder causes the body to produce too many platelets, raising the risk of dangerous blood clots.

By bringing platelet counts down to a safer range, anagrelide also helps reduce related symptoms, including bleeding and clotting events (thrombo-hemorrhagic events).
