Fluvoxamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down fluvoxamine (Luvox). In lab dish studies, Danshen seems to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, fluvoxamine could clear out of your system more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, drowsiness, headache, trouble sleeping, or jitteriness.

The key thing to keep in mind: this is only a theory from test-tube research. When scientists tested Danshen with another CYP1A2 drug in actual people, they didn't see a real change. So the concern is mostly on paper, not proven in humans. Still, since Danshen can also affect bleeding, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Fluvoxamine Used For?

Brand name: Luvox

Both fluvoxamine maleate tablets and Fluvoxamine Maleate extended-release capsules are approved to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — a condition marked by unwanted, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that cause significant distress or interfere with daily life.

Fluvoxamine maleate tablets are approved for adults and for children and adolescents ages 8 to 17. Fluvoxamine Maleate extended-release capsules are approved for adults with OCD; their use in pediatric patients naive to fluvoxamine requires special prescriber consideration regarding the lowest available dose.
